A Complete Guide

Premium Charcoal Products from Vietnam

Vietnam is the world's 4th largest charcoal exporter, trusted by global buyers for its stable raw material sources, strong production capacity, reliable delivery, and competitive pricing. From high-end Japanese-style grilling to everyday BBQ, shisha lounges, and industrial heating, Vietnamese charcoal has become a preferred choice across BBQ restaurants, wholesale distributors, and industrial users worldwide.

At KAOLA CO.,LTD, we offer six distinct product lines designed to meet the diverse needs of international buyers. Below is a comprehensive guide to each of our premium charcoal products.

Binchotan White Charcoal

1. The Pinnacle of Purity

Binchotan White Charcoal

Binchotan, also known as white charcoal, is the highest-grade charcoal available on the market. It is produced by carbonizing premium hardwoods at approximately 1,000°C in a low-oxygen environment, then quenched with ash, sand, or soil. This traditional Japanese method gives Binchotan its characteristic white-grey surface and remarkable density. When two pieces are struck together, they produce a metallic "ring" – a signature of authentic, high-quality Binchotan.

Explore Binchotan
Key Characteristics

Binchotan is 100% organic with no chemical additives, burns smokeless with intense heat, and leaves very little ash. It produces no flames, no odour, and no smoke when lighting, while generating an even heat that keeps food tender and juicy. Another key advantage is that Binchotan does not develop wild flame flare-ups when fat or meat juice drips onto it – unlike regular charcoal, which can burn the surface of food while leaving the inside uncooked.

Wood Varieties Offered
  • Eucalyptus White Charcoal – from sustainably managed plantations.
  • Maitiew (Mai Tieu) White Charcoal – Vietnamese specialty hardwood.
  • Longan / Lychee White Charcoal – from fruit trees, clean-burning.
Applications

Preferred fuel for Japanese-style grilling (yakitori, robata, teppanyaki). Also serves as:

  • Fuel for cooking and barbecuing
  • Water purification & Deodorization
  • Soil enrichment for flower beds

Black Hardwood Charcoal

2. Pure, Natural, Powerful

Black Hardwood Charcoal (Lump)

Black hardwood charcoal, commonly known as lump charcoal, is 100% natural charcoal produced directly from whole pieces of hardwood. Unlike briquettes, it contains no binders, no fillers, and no chemical additives. It is made by carbonizing hardwood in traditional kilns, resulting in irregularly shaped pieces that burn hotter and faster than other charcoal types.

Production Process:
1. Raw Material Selection

Carefully selected mangrove, khaya, eucalyptus, and longan wood.

2. Kiln Loading

Wood is stacked and sealed within traditional kilns using earth and vegetation.

3. Controlled Carbonization

Slowly heated at 400-700°C to drive out moisture and volatile compounds.

4. Natural Cooling

Kilns are fully sealed to cut off oxygen and allowed to cool naturally.

5. Sorting & Packaging

Charcoal is extracted, graded by size, and securely packaged for export.

Explore Hardwood Charcoal
Key Characteristics

Lump charcoal is prized for its high heat output and clean burn. It lights faster than briquettes, produces much less ash, and typically burns cleaner with lower emissions of pollutants such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, and volatile organic compounds. Studies show that lump charcoal tends to have a higher fixed carbon content (75%) than briquettes (60%) and a lower ash content (8% versus 18%).

Wood Varieties Offered by KAOLA
A. Mangrove Charcoal

One of the highest-grade types in Vietnam. Natural vertical cracks, dense inner structure, zero smoke, no spark.

Burn: 4-4.5h Kcal: 7,504 Ash: 6%
B. Eucalyptus Charcoal

Balanced heat and long burning time. Smooth body with slight natural cracking for easy ignition.

Burn: 3-3.5h Kcal: 6,892 Ash: 4.53%
C. Khaya (Kaya) Charcoal

Smooth, glossy surface. Creates white ash, lights quickly and maintains consistent heat.

Burn: 3-3.5h Kcal: 6,587 Ash: 6.34%
D. Longan & Mixed

Longan features a rougher surface for excellent airflow. Mixed Hardwood is a curated blend providing balanced performance at a cost-effective price.

Applications
High-heat grilling & searing Yakiniku & Korean BBQ Outdoor cooking & camping Industrial fuel
Sawdust Briquette Charcoal

3. Engineered for Consistency

Sawdust Briquette Charcoal

Sawdust briquette charcoal is a compressed biomass fuel made from wood residues such as sawdust, wood chips, and shavings. The sawdust serves as the primary raw material, which is then compressed into uniform blocks of identical size and heated to create high-quality charcoal briquettes.

Explore Briquettes
Key Characteristics

Sawdust briquettes produce minimal smoke, odour, or sparks during combustion. They are designed for long, consistent burn times – lasting significantly longer than lump charcoal due to their dense, uniform structure. The uniform shape ensures stable placement on grates and even heat distribution.

Shapes Offered
  • Hexagon Briquettes (Premium Ogatan) – Feature a center hole for better airflow, resulting in more stable and longer-lasting burns.
  • Square / Cylinder Briquettes – Standard, cost-effective bulk options.
Applications
Shisha / Hookah lounges Wood-fired pizza ovens Consistent BBQ grilling

Pressed Charcoal Briquettes

4. Dense, Long-Lasting Fuel

Pressed Charcoal

Pressed charcoal (often referred to as charcoal briquettes) is made from compressed sawdust or wood scraps, offering longer burn time than lump charcoal. Unlike lump charcoal which comes in irregular shapes and sizes, pressed charcoal is uniform in shape and size, allowing for more consistent burn and heat distribution.

Key Characteristics & Applications

Pressed charcoal offers several distinct advantages: Uniform size ensures consistent airflow and even heat distribution. It has a longer burn time, outlasting lump charcoal for extended cooking sessions. The dense structure makes it less fragile, producing less dust during handling. It offers predictable performance, ideal for extended BBQ sessions requiring consistent heat, commercial grilling operations, and industrial heating applications.

Coconut Shell Charcoal

5. Sustainable & Versatile

Coconut Shell Charcoal

Coconut shell charcoal is a premium, 100% natural, and eco-friendly product derived from the shells of mature coconuts. Produced through a controlled carbonization process, it is known for its high fixed carbon content, low ash, and excellent calorific value.

Explore Coconut Charcoal
Key Characteristics

Coconut shell charcoal is considered a superior raw material due to its small macro-pore structure, which is highly effective for absorbing gases, vapours, and removing colour and odour. Its high carbon content and hardness make it an excellent raw material for manufacturing coconut charcoal briquettes and activated carbon.

Forms Available & Applications
  • Raw Coconut Shell Lump – Natural shell halves, ideal for artisanal uses, water filtration, and BBQ applications.
  • Coconut Shell Briquettes – Compressed forms for consistent burning, often with center holes for improved airflow.

It has remarkably diverse applications including domestic and industrial fuel, environmental-friendly BBQ grilling, raw material for activated carbon, water filtration and air purification, Shisha/Hookah briquettes, skincare and cosmetics, gold recovery, and blacksmithing.

Procurement Guide

B2B Ordering & Export FAQ

What is the Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) for international shipments?
Our standard MOQ is one 20ft container (approximately 17-20 Metric Tons depending on the product type and packaging). For Binchotan and highly specialized premium charcoal, we can negotiate trial orders. However, maximizing a 40ft High Cube (40HC) container is the most cost-effective method to reduce your ocean freight cost per kilogram.
What are your accepted international payment terms?
To ensure a secure transaction for both parties, we standardly accept T/T (Telegraphic Transfer) with a 30% advance deposit to initiate production and secure raw materials, and the remaining 70% balance against the scanned copy of the original Bill of Lading (B/L). We also accept 100% Irrevocable L/C (Letter of Credit) at sight from reputable international banks for large volume, long-term continuous contracts.
How do you handle custom Private Label (OEM) packaging?
We offer end-to-end white-label manufacturing. You can provide your own digital artwork, or our in-house design team can assist you. For custom printed retail carton boxes, there is a one-time printing plate setup fee. Lead time for the first OEM order may take an additional 7-10 days to manufacture the custom packaging materials. Subsequent orders will adhere strictly to our standard 14-21 day rapid lead time.
Do you guarantee compliance with my country's customs regulations?
Absolutely. With profound export experience to strict markets like Australia, Japan, and the EU, we understand international phytosanitary laws. We provide a complete suite of certified documentation including Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Bill of Lading, Certificate of Origin (applicable to your region for tax reduction), SGS/Vinacontrol Quality Reports, and certified Fumigation Certificates (including rigorous BMSB treatments specifically formulated for Oceania).
How long is your standard production lead time?
For standard orders (1-3 containers) without custom packaging, our lead time is typically 14-21 days from receipt of the deposit. For OEM orders requiring new custom printed cartons, please allow an additional 7-10 days for the first order to complete the printing plates. Transit time via ocean freight will vary depending on the destination port.
Can you send product samples before we place a bulk order?
Yes, we provide commercial samples for quality evaluation. However, due to international shipping regulations regarding dangerous goods (DOT Class 4.2), charcoal samples must be shipped via specialized courier services with proper MSDS documentation. The buyer is responsible for the sample shipping costs, which will be fully deducted from your first official bulk order.
Do you offer CIF or FOB pricing?
We standardly quote FOB (Free On Board) from major Vietnam ports (Cat Lai Port, Ho Chi Minh City or Da Nang Port). However, leveraging our strong relationships with international shipping lines, we can also provide highly competitive CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight) or CFR quotes directly to your requested destination port upon request.
