The Craftsmanship

Japanese Methodology, Perfected in Vietnam

Binchotan (備長炭), or white charcoal, traces its origins back to the Edo period in the Wakayama Prefecture of Japan. The traditional crafting process is an art form: wood is slowly carbonized at low temperatures over several days. The kiln temperature is then rapidly spiked to over 1200°C. Finally, the glowing charcoal is pulled from the kiln and immediately smothered in a cooling mixture of white ash and sand.

At Charcoal Kaola, we have successfully adopted these centuries-old Japanese kiln techniques. By combining strict Japanese temperature control methodologies with abundant, high-density Vietnamese hardwoods like Eucalyptus and Maitiew, we bridge the gap between tradition and modern scale. The result is an authentic, export-grade white charcoal that mirrors the metallic density and smokeless purity of Kishu Binchotan, backed by a robust and cost-effective supply chain.

The Making of Binchotan

4-Step Traditional Process

1

Wood Preparation

Hardwood (Eucalyptus, Longan, Lychee, Orange) is carefully selected, cut to size, and sun-dried.

2

15-Day Kiln Drying

Wood is stacked inside the kiln and slowly dried using external firewood for 15 days to remove all moisture.

3

1,200°C Carbonization

The kiln is sealed for anaerobic burning. The temperature is spiked to 1,200°C, creating extreme density and purity.

4

Ash Quenching

Glowing charcoal is pulled from the kiln and rapidly smothered in an ash/sand mixture, giving it the signature white coating.

Binchotan FAQ

Why choose Charcoal Kaola for Binchotan?
As a direct manufacturer based in Vietnam, Charcoal Kaola offers the perfect balance of premium quality and scalable supply. We utilize authentic Japanese kiln methodologies combined with locally sourced, high-density hardwoods. This ensures you can supply your local market with authentic, restaurant-grade white charcoal featuring a steady heat profile, zero smoke, and sparkless burn, all while benefiting from highly competitive FOB pricing, reliable volume capacity, and full export compliance support.
How do you grade your Binchotan?

We meticulously grade our Binchotan based on strict length and diameter criteria to suit different culinary markets. Standard OEM packaging sizes include 5-30cm lengths and 2-6cm diameters.

Japanese Market
  • • LM-000, LM-001, LM-002, LW-777 (Length 20-28cm)
  • • MM-000, MM-001, MM-002, MW-888 (Length 8-20cm)
Korean Market
  • • Large (L): 8-10cm Length | 5-7cm Diameter
  • • Medium (M): 6-8cm Length | 3.5-5cm Diameter
  • • Small (S): 4-6cm Length | 2.5-3.5cm Diameter
  • • Ex Small (SS): 2-4cm Length | 1.5-2.5cm Diameter
Why is Binchotan heavier than normal charcoal?
Binchotan is carbonized at extremely high temperatures (>1200°C) and then rapidly cooled with ash and sand. This process shrinks the wood, making it incredibly dense. This high density is why a 20ft container can fit up to 8.5 tons of Binchotan, and why it burns 3x longer than regular charcoal.
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for Binchotan?
Our standard Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) for Binchotan charcoal is a 1x20ft container (approximately 8.5 Metric Tons). However, for first-time buyers seeking to test the market, we can discuss LCL (Less than Container Load) options or trial orders depending on the shipping destination.
Do you offer OEM private label packaging?
Yes, we specialize in OEM and Private Label packaging. We can pack Binchotan into 10kg, 12kg, or 15kg 5-layer corrugated carton boxes featuring your company's logo, branding, and specific language requirements. A small one-time fee applies for the printing plate setup on your first custom order.
